Learning Outcomes
- Add the Foundry Connect connection for the Codex IDE extension.
- Install the skills, which the extension cannot get from a plugin.
Codex IDE extension
The IDE extension takes no plugin at all, so unlike Codex CLI the two halves are installed separately: the connection, and the skills.
New here? Do Getting Started first.
Add the connection
Same command as the CLI, and the extension reads the same configuration file:
codex mcp add foundry --url https://foundry.your-org.edu/mcp
which is stored in ~/.codex/config.toml as:
[mcp_servers.foundry]
url = "https://foundry.your-org.edu/mcp"
You can write that block by hand instead, if you would rather not hunt for the binary. Keep the name
foundry, and keep the /mcp on the end of the address.
Install the skills
There is no plugin route here, so copy them in from the plugin repository:
git clone https://github.com/UMMS-Biocore/foundry-connect-plugin
Then copy the skill directories into your Codex skills directory.
The skills directory is not where the documentation says
The installed Skill Installer defaults to ~/.codex/skills, which is not one of the
locations OpenAI's published documentation lists. If a skill does not appear after copying it,
check where yours actually landed before assuming the copy failed.
Signing in
Identical to the CLI, including the version requirement: codex mcp login foundry needs Foundry
Connect 2.22.0 or later, because Codex constructs its own sign-in address and never falls back.
On an older instance, use a Personal Access Token. See
Codex CLI → Signing in for the detail.
